It’s Never Too Late

I wasn’t looking for advice about life when I picked up the New York Times Magazine,  but that’s what I found in an article about a leading financial analyst.  “It’s never too late to do what we can,” says Jeremy Grantham. The founder of the asset-management firm GMO, was speaking about why he’s an unexpected advocate for environmental concerns (A Darker Shade of Green, Carlo Rotella). http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/14/magazine/can-jeremy-grantham-profit-from-ecological-mayhem.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=A%20Darker%20Shade%20of%20Green&st=cse.

“It’s never too late to do what we can.”  He’s talking about life, I thought as I looked up from the article, not just about the environment.  I looked at the tortilla chips I was snarfing and set them down. I thought of a broken relationship and what steps I could take to repair it. I thought about a plan for writing again.  It’s never too late to do what we can…

  • to bring good from our life.
  • to give up a grudge.
  • to say, “I’m sorry,” “I love you,” or “Thank you.” Even if the person has died, we can say these words and trust them to the God who hears all prayers–shouted, whispered, or murmured in our heart.

It’s never too late to to do what we can…

  • to become frugal.
  • to become generous
  • to change eating habits, stop smoking or get sober.

It’s never too late to to do what we can…

  • to start smiling at people.
  • to learn something new.
  • to reduce our environmental impact.
  • to bring beauty and joy to life.

Sometimes it is too late in a particular way, as with my heart diagnosis coming too late to avoid permanent heart damage.  But even in this example, it’s not too late for me to bring something good from what happened.

It’s never too late to do what we can.
